Leading in Sustainability
A More Thoughtful Stay in Berkeley
At Hotel Shattuck Plaza, sustainability is part of how we care for our guests, our team, and the Berkeley community. We consider environmental and social impacts in day-to-day decisions and work with employees, guests, and suppliers to conserve resources, prevent waste and pollution, choose responsible products, and continually improve, while maintaining the comfort and service our guests expect.
Recognized for Greener Operations
Hotel Shattuck Plaza participates in the Bay Area Green Business Program, a local initiative that recognizes businesses taking practical steps to conserve energy and water, reduce waste, use safer products, and support a healthier community. Maintaining this recognition means continuing to evaluate our practices and document our progress.
Reduce, Conserve, Save
Energy and climate: We work to reduce energy consumption through efficient operating practices, preventive maintenance, and evaluation of renewable-energy opportunities when feasible.
Water conservation: We monitor water use, support efficient housekeeping and laundry practices, and respond promptly to leaks and avoidable water loss.
Waste reduction and recycling: We aim to prevent waste and pollution while maximizing appropriate recovery of food scraps, used oil, glass, plastic, cardboard, and paper.
Safer products: We properly label, store, and handle products and work to reduce hazardous substances when effective alternatives are available.
Responsible purchasing: We consider sustainability and climate impacts when selecting applicable products, services, and suppliers.
Employee engagement: We train employees on practices relevant to their roles and encourage ideas that improve environmental performance without compromising safety or guest service.
Guest and community engagement: We give guests practical ways to participate and support our responsibility to the Berkeley community.
Our Sustainability Action Plan establishes measurable goals for the areas where hotel operations can make the greatest difference.
- Reduce energy use per occupied room night by 5% versus the approved baseline.
- Reduce water use per occupied room night by 5% versus the approved baseline.
- Reduce landfill waste per occupied room night by 10% and improve waste diversion.
- Have at least 75% of applicable recurring purchases meet approved environmental criteria.
- Train all new employees within 30 days and achieve at least 95% annual refresher completion.
- Maintain Bay Area Green Business recognition and address corrective actions promptly.
Sustainability is an ongoing responsibility. Our General Manager and department leaders review performance, employee and guest feedback, operational needs, and opportunities for improvement. We update our policy and goals at least annually while continuing to provide the welcoming Berkeley experience our guests expect.
Guests are invited to join our efforts in ways that work for their stay:
- Reuse towels and linens when convenient.
- Turn off lights, televisions, and climate controls when leaving the room.
- Use the appropriate recycling and waste receptacles provided.
- Inform our team about leaks, unnecessary waste, or ideas that could help us improve.
